Welcome to Spiral Cellars in Australia, launched in January 2011 through our exclusive distributors in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney.

With 30 years' experience of providing wine cellars across the UK and Europe, we are delighted to be able to meet the growing demand for our unique product here, in Australia, where wine plays such a prominent part in your culture, lifestyle and economy.

In the UK we have four installation teams, each installing one cellar a week, every week. In Australia we have an installation team in Canberra (servicing ACT), Sydney (servicing NSW) and Melbourne (servicing Victoria) with the capacity to install one cellar every week. Our installation teams in Australia are Licensed Builders who have been thoroughly trained by our UK team of experts in cellar installation techniques and every project is covered by Home Warranty Insurance.

The principles of installing Spiral Cellars in the UK also apply to Australia, but with a few considerations:

Where can the Spiral Cellar go?
Book a Site Survey
Can I see a real Spiral Cellar ?
Can I install the cellar myself?
Is planning approval required for installing a cellar?
Once an installation date is booked...
Who is the distributor for my area?
Useful Information

Where can the Spiral Cellar go?

You choose! We have installed cellars in kitchens, Spiral Cellars dining rooms, garages, hallways. However, we do not recommend installing your cellar in a North- facing conservatory or sun room due to the risk of overheating. As you will see from the diagram, other orientations are acceptable. Optimum performance can be achieved where the ventilation pipes are on the South or South-Eastern aspect, with no more than 5m in plan to a perimeter wall.

Book a Site Survey

Once you have decided that you really like the idea of having a Spiral Cellar, we invite you to book a free, no-obligation site survey. One of our surveyors will visit your home and guide you through the decision-making process, ensuring that your cellar is in the best possible location and that the specification (depth/ trap door etc) meets your needs and budget.

Please telephone your nearest distributor who will arrange for one of our surveyors to visit your home (or meet with the architect and/or builder where appropriate). The surveyor will be able to advise you on the best location for the cellar as well as gathering basic information on load-bearing walls, location of services etc.

If you are planning other building work – an extension, for example, please involve us as early as possible in the process. We can review your plans and advise on the optimum cellar location. A site visit may not be required in these circumstances.

Can I see a real Spiral Cellar?

Even though we are new to Australia, we already have a few customers in Sydney and Melbourne. If you are in one of these cities, we may be able to arrange a visit to one of these cellars. You can also get a very good idea of how the cellar works and the space it affords by watching the video on our website.

Can I install the cellar myself?

No. Installation requires our specialist expertise. However, you can arrange for your builder to excavate the hole. We will provide instructions and guidance and our Project Manager will visit to confirm that the site and excavation are ready before our team arrives to fit the cellar.

Is planning approval required for installing a cellar?

Planning requirements vary from state to state. Where planning approval is required, in NSW for example, we will help guide you through the Development Application process, leading to a Construction Certificate.

Once an installation date is booked...

...and the deposit received, our engineer prepares the calculations and we can then apply for the relevant Development Application, Building Approval and/or Construction Certificate, depending on what is required in your state or territory. Where the cellar installation is in a Heritage Listed Building or Conservation Area, a Heritage Impact Statement may be required as part of the approval process and additional time should be allowed for this.

Useful information

Please download this article featured in Gourmet Traveller Wine, Oct/Nov 2010, featuring various wine storage solutions for your own home. It was published before we launched in Australia, and therefore does not feature our product, but it does offer you a good insight into alternative options to a Spiral Cellar.
