We still meet people who were not aware of this – so here’s a quick recap. As long as wine is held in the name of a private individual, who is not a wine dealer or trader, under current UK taxation rules, the Inland Revenue does not consider that holding a fine wine stock generates an income.

Wine itself has an in-depth history; however the storage of wine does not. Over time a few simple unintentional actions have led to us gaining a great understanding of the proper conditions for storing wine.

There are two reasons for decanting a wine. The first is to aerate it; the second is to remove any sediment that may have collected in the bottle while the wine was ageing. Most wines don’t throw a huge deposit, but still recommended to decant as a matter of course. Unless your wine is very delicate and likely to be harmed by the effects of a little oxygen, decanting nearly always enhances a wine’s perfume and fruit.

Wine consumption and wine collecting in the UK is dramatically on the increase, with the average adult now drinking 12% more wine than they did just five years ago, and we’re drinking better quality and more expensive wines. Majestic has just reported a 14.4% increase in 2009 sales of fine wines on last year, now representing over 4% of retail sales.
So storing your wine under the stairs or in the garden shed will no longer do, as fine wine needs to be stored in the optimum conditions to retain its quality and flavour. Currently around 3,000 people in Britain own a Spiral Cellar, a figure that has doubled in the last 10 years, and if the current trend continues it could mean that 15,000 cellars will exist in the UK by 2030. That’s a huge increase. So with this in mind, what changes will affect the wine we drink in years to come?
