Brunello di Montalcino 2005, Pieve di Santa Restituta, Angelo Gaja: £223.40 per 6 inc. VAT
In 1994, Angelo Gaja made his first move outside of his Piedmont homeland, purchasing the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino. Over the last 16 years, the wines have become established amongst the élite of the region, which has come as little surprise to those of us who have witnessed Angelo’s extraordinary commitment to quality over his long, distinguished career. This newly released 2005 estate wine is a blend of fruit normally destined for the top-level Rennina & Sugarille cuvées and displays an open and expressive nose of dark cherry, tobacco and sweet spices. The palate is bright and energetic with raspberry, redcurrant and more morello cherry notes. Still very youthful, this will benefit from 2-5 years of careful cellaring and will then drink well for a further 5 years after that.
Brunello di Montalcino 2004, Sesti: £479.88 per 12 inc. VAT
Guiseppe Sesti is one of the true great characters of Italian wine making. Starting his career as a Fresco painter in Venice, he moved his family to Montalcino in the 1970s where he bought and set about restoring the deserted hilltop hamlet of Castello di Argiano to its former glory. Having rejuvenated the village’s old winery, he set about producing his first bottles in the early 1990s and is now regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the region. His Brunellos are made in a classic style and, having long been fascinated by astronomy, are grown, harvested and vinified according to the cycle of the Moon. This 2004 is an especially dense, full-bodied wine from Guiseppe that shows off the remarkable depth and richness that the vintage provided. Deep with black cherry, liquorice and leather notes, this is a brilliant, traditional style. Cellar for another 2-3 years and then enjoy up to 2024.
Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille 2004, Pieve di Santa Resitiuta, Angelo Gaja: £476.03 per 6 inc.
Sugarille is the top Brunello made by Angelo, with all fruit sourced from the oldest parcel of vines on the estate (a single vineyard of the same name). 2004 was an outstanding vintage across Tuscany and this wine really does represent one of the pinnacles of wines making in the region. Still incredibly juvenile at this stage of its life, the nose and palate is packed with black cherries, plums, liquorice, minerals and leather. Despite the wine’s heft, all of the components are woven together with remarkable harmony. We would cellar this wonderful effort from Angelo for at least another 5 years. It will drink well to 2025 and beyond.
