This is a big wine. Cherry and coffee notes on the nose, the palate is bold with generous fruit (think strawberries and blackberries squishy and ripe). Youthful, deep colour; perfumy, ripe blackcurrant nose with a hint of currant leaf; powerful impression of dark, dry, concentrated fruit in the mouth, and a cedary smoothness despite the still obvious tannin and acid freshness. Fontodi Chianti Classico 2006
Chianti Classico (Tuscany), Italy

Top estate Fontodi's all-Sangiovese Classico is aged 12 months in French oak, but none of the barrels are new. It is ripe, bloody and full of fruit on the nose with a sense of gamey, fleshy character. Very good fruit quality, on the palate, a tight, leathery note that is typical, but cherry and blackcurrant gloss to the fruit and svelte tannins. Sourced from old bush vines in the highest part of the Rioja Alavesa, Telmo Rodriguez's French oak-aged red is a very classy blend of Tempranillo with 10% Garnacha.
