TO DRINK NOW

2009 Taste the Difference Pouilly-Fumé (£9.99, 13.5%, Sainsbury’s)
Sourced from a single estate in this prestigious Loire Valley appellation, Sainsbury’s own-label Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best sub-£10 whites in the high street. Elegant, tangy and spicy with notes of gooseberry and quince and superb length.

TO DRINK IN FIVE YEARS

2008 Southern Right Pinotage, Walker Bay (£11.99, 13.27%, Waitrose)
You might not think of Pinotage as a grape variety that deserves to be cellared, but you’d be wrong. This cool climate example from one of the Cape’s best producers is restrained and well balanced with subtle red fruits and stylish oak.

TO DRINK IN TEN YEARS

2005 Rioja Reserva Selección Especial, Muga (£20 each for two, 14%, Majestic)
2005 was the second successive excellent vintage in Rioja. This is still a baby at the moment, with smoky, concentrated fruit flavours and lots of vanilla oak, but its charms will emerge over the next decade.
